HOPE GROWS HERE

Introducing The Hope Garden

The Hope Garden is a joint effort of Snack Pak 4 Kids and Heal the City to address the nutrition needs of the Heal the City Shalom patients. 73% of HTC Shalom patients are food insecure, and in need of supplemental nutrition. We have combined the SP4K garden and the HTC garden to maximize produce production. We have a total of 60 raised garden beds that will grow Spring, Summer, and Fall crops March through October.

HEALING

IMPROVING DIETS TO ADDRESS ISSUES

Patients qualify for Heal the City’s Shalom program based on economic need and the presence of chronic diseases. As such, these patients face a myriad of complex and abundant needs: while most are encouraged by their physician to improve their diet to address issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, many are living on a limited income that makes purchasing healthy, nutritious, or fresh foods difficult or next to impossible. The produce that the Hope Garden produces this season will address this gap in patient care by providing regular and dependable access to fresh vegetables.

This resource dovetails into the Shalom Wellness Program where patients have access to a variety of on-site nutrition resources, including:

  • One-on-one consults with a registered dietician
  • Nutrition classes, including some tailored directly to diabetics
  • Healthy cooking classes taught by the High Plains Food Bank

Pairing education with food resources from the Hope Garden will ensure that patients both receive the nutritious food they need and are equipped to utilize it effectively to meet the needs of their families.

Although Snack Pak has grown gardens in previous years, this growing season marks the first time we have combined efforts with Heal the City and the High Plains Food Bank to provide food for HTC patients. It is our hope that an organized and thoughtfully planted approach will increase production and allow us to focus our efforts on serving more high-needs individuals in a sustainable manner with long-term impact. Our goal is to provide a consistent and reliable source of fresh nutritious produce to impact the health of underserved families in our community.
